St. Joseph County leaf task force that was meeting privately has disbanded

SOUTH BEND — Amid questions about whether its closed-door meetings could violate state law, a leaf pickup task force was disbanded by St. Joseph County Commissioner Deb Fleming.

But Fleming, who led the effort to organize the task force, insisted it wasn’t eliminated because of legal concerns about meeting privately.

“There was such a misunderstanding about how things were done, and we want to move forward with helping the community,” she said. “I didn’t want it to come across like there was fighting among the different government agencies, so we want to work together more.”

The move, announced Tuesday at a Board of Commissioners meeting, will allow a new committee to be hatched by elected officials, Commissioner President Andy Kositelney said.
