Independent Poll: Branstad Job Approval Plummets In Wake of Scandals

Only 17% of Iowans believe the Governor had no knowledge of scandals

DES MOINES -- Governor Branstad's approval rating has plummeted after a series of scandals in his administration, and Iowans do not believe the Governor is being honest about his knowledge of those scandals, according to a new independent poll released by Progress Iowa today. The poll was conducted by Public Policy Polling on April 19 and 20.

“Governor Branstad’s pattern of denial, denial, and more denial about his scandals is no longer credible,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “The Governor has pointed the finger at his employees, his political opponents, and anyone but himself in an effort to deflect responsibility. Now, only 17 percent of Iowans believe he's telling the truth. The Governor needs to hold himself accountable, take responsibility for his part in these scandals, and come clean with the public about what he knew."

Key findings from the survey:

More Iowans disapprove (45%) than approve (43%) of Governor Branstad's job performance.

The vast majority of Iowans (83%) are very or somewhat aware of the recent scandals in the Branstad administration.

Very few Iowans (17%) believe the Governor had no knowledge of the scandals in his administration.

Most Iowans (56%) believe he knew more than he's letting on.

Governor Branstad’s lead over State Senator Jack Hatch has narrowed considerably (43%-38%)

Folks - I think Branstad can go down this time around!

Good news because as you said, Branstad can be had this time around, bad news because we just don't need a crook like Branstad running this state for another minute. The scandals are damaging to our great state.
