(37,364 posts)We vacation in the Dodgeville area quite a bit. I love the topography and the House on Rocks. That is my favorite building in the universe and one day I'm going to get to see all of the collections. We also visit up in the Minocqua area where my daughter's inlaws live . That is such a beautiful area. My favorite breakfast place up there is that Paul Bunyans place, just for the donuts alone.

Iowa is still a state where you can hear the birds sing and not be inundated with the noise of police sirens and heavy traffic. The air is pure and the water doesn't need a ton of filters before you can drink or cook with it. If you need help, your neighbor is right there and we still provide dishes of food for the family members and friends when there is a death. May sound old-fashioned, but it's a feel-good tradition that is still practiced.
I agree. Iowa is great. I was born here and will die here.

You are right about Iowa. This state is the best. You can see the stars at night in most of the state, once you factor out the five or six urban areas we have. Our whole village uses a communal well. I hope that oil pipe is voted down so it doesn't risk the aquafer. With Braindead running things, he'll probably shovel the first bit of dirt and sign all eminient domain orders personally.
I love the sense of community people still have here. About four years ago, a straightline wind took out the crown of the big maple tree in our front yard and deposited it across the driveway we share with the neighbor. We heard it hit the ground and waited a few minutes until the worst of the storm had passed. We had just gotten outside when a carload of fellow villagers showed up with chainsaws and spouses. Within half an hour the debris had been cut up and hauled back to the brush pile, with the big chunks being given to someone there who still burns wood. Our village is unincorporated so we really do rely on each other. The men all take turns mowing the entry way to the town. We pool resources and maintain a communal vegetable garden and orchard. Food harvested goes to the elderly and disabled for free. Those who volunteer time can harvest from it freely. Plenty to go around. People quite often use their skills to help one another. One guy in town helped install our garage door with my husband, and my husband went down to help hm install ceiling fans recently. Good people all.
There is a very real belief in equality and fairness. People from outside of the state make all sorts of erroneous assumptions. The pundits all get us wrong during elections season. The one thing we have in spades is common sense and an Iowan will listen to you until the cows come home and still try to seek the best solution so as not to harm their neighbor too.

(3,665 posts)there wasn't anyone there except my parents and me. You could wander through all the rooms and sit a while. It was amazing. Late 50's or early 60's. It sure has grown since then.

(16,254 posts)Some of those collections must be worth major bucks. It was just such a unique idea and structure.

And I did not know that fact about the President of Grinnell College. That's pretty cool. I have a friend who is a long time employee of that college and he loves it. Now I see why.

(23 posts)So much of this information, I did not know. I've been an Eastern Iowan all my life and learned some new things, here.
I'll save it to refer back to.
