last winter maybe? My first thought was that Iowa would be a likely place to start. I think they only own the Register and the Iowa City Press-Citizen in Iowa.
I am old enough to remember when the Register was one of the 5 best newspapers in the country - a list that included the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Washington Post and St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
At one time the Register had a Washington bureau and I believe a Moscow, USSR bureau. The Register was the go to outlet for all things agricultural. All this when it was an independent. Then Gannet took over and it has been steadily downhill ever since.
Believe it or not, I shared a plane ride from Greensboro, NC to Chicago with a just resigned VP of Gannet. He had resigned because of his vehement opposition to Gannet's policy of expansion and taking over local papers all over the country. So I got 2.5 hours of the future of the news media. Quite enlightening. And of course he pretty much laid out just what would happen and he was right on the money.
