TOMORROW: Lemonade Stand to Highlight Gender Pay Gap

Des Moines, Iowa -- Make It Work, a national campaign to advance economic security for working people, will be elevating the issue of equal pay at a one-time lemonade stand on Saturday, August 22 from 10am to 8pm local time right outside the Iowa State Fair at 2901 E. Walnut Street, Des Moines, IA.

While men will pay a dollar for a cup of lemonade, women will only pay 78 cents, and African American and Latina women will pay 64 cents and 54 cents, respectively, to raise awareness of the gender wage gap that still plagues working women and their families. The stand is in a high traffic area a couple of blocks outside the fair.

Iowans with personal stories of struggling to manage the increasing demands of work and family will be at the lemonade stand and available for interviews to speak about their experience and how that will influence their vote. Make It Work’s leaders in Iowa will also be present to educate visitors about how we can use this election to catalyze support for policies that provide equal pay for equal work, paid leave, and affordable, quality childcare.
