Iowa governor's race has GOP asking if Democrat is too rich

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Coming from Republicans, whose party celebrates wealth and praises President Donald Trump for his ability to turn a profit, the criticism of wealthy Iowa Democratic governor candidate Fred Hubbell has been a bit jarring.

Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Jeff Kaufmann led the way, with the mocking refrain that "Prince Frederick just got it all handed to him."

On primary election night, Hubbell's opponent, GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds, joined in by arguing, "The issue isn't that Fred Hubbell has been rich his entire life, it's that he has no idea what it's (like) not to be."

The claim obviously plays to Reynolds' strength, given her humble roots growing up in a blue-collar family in a town of 700. Why not contrast her everyday experiences with Hubbell, whose ancestors built incredible wealth by helping create modern Des Moines and whose family home overlooking downtown now serves as the governor's mansion?

Matthew 7:15-20 New King James Version

15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
