Laurel County murder suspect says he killed his wife to end her pain

Moments after his wife lay in her bed..with two gunshot wounds...Ernest Chris Chumbley picked up the phone and dialed 911.

“Hello….I just shot my wife,” Chris Chumbley is heard telling the dispatcher in the 911 tapes obtained by WKYT.

“She told me she wanted me to end her pain. All I said,’Jay, all I’ve got is what the doctor gave you. She said 'no, I want you to stop my pain for good,’” said Chumbley.

This is such a sad situation. I can't imagine being in that position. There has got to be a more humane way to deal with terminal illness.

I doubt KY will pass an assisted suicide bill anytime soon. Too many religious extremists. But maybe if cases like this get enough attention it will happen eventually.

Death with Dignity Acts

Three states have enacted Death with Dignity laws: OregoDeath with Dignity Actsn, Washington, and Vermont. These laws allow mentally competent, terminally-ill adult state residents to voluntarily request and receive a prescription medication to hasten their death. This is one of many end-of-life care options available in Oregon, Washington, and Vermont.

Oregon voters approved of their Death with Dignity Act in 1994 and confirmed their support in 1997. Oregon's law went into effect in 1998. The voters of Washington passed their law in 2008 and it was implemented in 2009 after no credible legal challenges. Vermont became the third state with a Death with Dignity law in 2013, and the law went into effect immediately after Governor Shumlin signed it on May 20.

It looks like a good organization. I'm glad these laws are getting passed in some states, it will hopefully spread.
