As Maine rents continue to spike, new bill aims to protect tenants' rights

Freshman Rep. Chris Kessler (D-South Portland) has started off his first term in the legislature hoping to alleviate some of the strain that renters experience living in one of the least affordable markets in the nation.

It’s a situation he knows too well: with landlords allowed to give just one month’s notice before a renter is required to move out, individuals are often left to undertake the exhausting search for a new place in a tight market with little time to spare.

One of Kessler’s bills, LD 308, looks to change that.

The bill — which the legislature’s Labor and Housing Committee is set to consider later this session — would amend two sections (§6002 and §6015) of current state law governing the rights of landlords and tenants.

“The bill itself, it does two things: it increases the notification for a rent increase to 75 days from 45 days,” he explained, “and it increases the notice to [vacate] from 30 to 60 days.”

that it does not go far enough. I would like to see full scale rent control, or at least limits on the amounts of increases.
