Annapolis teachers fight for bonuses
Angela Ross, a science teacher at Annapolis High School, took a job at the school a decade ago with the expectation that her salary will steadily grow. But in those 10 years, she's also seen her salary fall.
A first year teacher in 2007, Ross got a bonus for taking the job, another for helping students reach standards, and one more for staying. She also got paid to work during the summer, boosting her pay. The bonuses were the result of a state approved plan by former Superintendent Kevin Maxwell to make drastic improvements to a school struggling to make academic progress and failing short of graduation goals.
Teachers worked with students in the summer and were paid more than teachers at other schools for extra-instructional work. A year after the changes, Annapolis High met state standards.
As a first year teacher, Ross was reluctant to work at a struggling school, but the bonuses attracted her.
