Maryland woman, 87, dies from injuries sustained in crash as police chased wanted man
by Kevin Connell/ABC7 Sunday, March 10th 2019
LEXINGTON PARK, Md. (ABC7) An 87-year-old woman who was injured when a man fleeing police crashed into her vehicle in St. Marys County has died. ... The St. Marys County Sheriffs Office said Carol Jean Anderson, of Leonardtown, died Saturday nearly a week after a car driven by Machiavelli Tyzhae Savoy, 20, of Lexington Park, collided with her vehicle while he was fleeing police.
According to the sheriffs office, when officers spotted Savoy and tried to take him into custody around 12:44 p.m. on March 3, he refused to stop and fled. As officers pursued him, he lost control of a 1995 GMC Jimmy on a curve on Pegg Road in the area of West Westbury Boulevard in Lexington Park. He crossed the center line into the southbound lanes and was hit by a 2016 Volkswagen Beetle driven by Anderson. ... Both Anderson and Savoy were transported to MedStar St. Marys Hospital before subsequently being moved to area trauma centers in critical condition with incapacitating injuries, authorities said.
Savoy was wanted on numerous outstanding warrants, including handgun on person, handgun in a vehicle and loaded handgun in vehicle. Officers found a loaded handgun on Savoy, as well as other items of evidence in his vehicle before he was transported to the hospital for treatment. ... The sheriffs office said speed, driver error and attempting to elude arrest appear to be contributing factors in the collision. ... The sheriffs office is working with the Office of the States Attorney regarding additional criminal charges for Savoy following the crash and now death of Anderson.
Savoy's sister, Corrina Lyevette Savoy, 24, of Lexington Park, also was arrested at the scene. According to authorities, she arrived on scene of the crash and began to yell and curse at officers as officers and emergency personnel were attempting to provide aid. She was then arrested after they said she punched an officer on scene after being given multiple commands to cease her actions. ... When she was arrested, authorities said Corrina Savoy resisted being placed into handcuffs and continued to hinder and obstruct the investigation. She has been charged with second-degree assault, obstructing and hindering, and resisting arrest.

(7,528 posts)1. This is a good reason not to chase suspects.
Unless they are a direct threat to someone (such as a hostage situation). Car chases put everyone in danger, not just the drivers.
Not to mention firing at a fleeing suspect on foot.
