Brookline Could Take A Symbolic Stand Against Boston 2024

Brookline Could Take A Symbolic Stand Against Boston 2024

Brookline has been touted by Boston 2024 as a possible Olympic site for golf as well as a portion of the marathon course, but in a new article that could be adopted on Thursday at Town Meeting, it's expected to say the town was "never consulted about hosting the 2024 Olympics." According to the Boston Globe, Brookline (immersed in its Town Meeting that began on Tuesday night) could adopt the article as a measure to get on the record in regards to the 2024 Summer Games bid.

The Town Meeting measure would have little actual meaning beyond a symbolic statement, but it would be yet another piece of bad news for the already-struggling Boston 2024 partnership. Having only recently switched the bid's chairman (from John Fish to Steve Pagliuca), the timing of Brookline's public opposition arguably couldn't come at a worse time.

While the bid maintains support from Boston Mayor Marty Walsh, it is already opposed by Cambridge leadership.

Given that the proposed site for Olympic golf is The Country Club in Brookline, and that also part of the marathon course tracks through Boston neighbor, losing the support of a community in such close proximity to Boston would be a major blow.
