Trial postponed for retired Springfield Police Det. Kevin Burnham, accused of stealing over $385K from evidence room

SPRINGFIELD - A new trial date of March 20 was set Tuesday for Kevin Burnham, a retired Springfield Police detective accused of stealing more than $385,000 from the department's evidence locker.

Defense lawyer Charles Dolan requested a continuance of the trial date, which was Tuesday. Continuances of trial dates and other court procedures are commonplace in Hampden Superior Court.

Dolan did not give a reason for the request for the continuance, which Judge Edward J. McDonough allowed. The prosecution had no objection.

When a case reaches a trial date it is assigned to a specific judge's session and that judge will determine when a trial will start. Or it can be put in the pool awaiting assignment to a judge.
