Virginia did not elect the first transgender person into public office; Massachusetts did

Election Day brought about change at local, state and federal levels across the country.

Residents of Virginia's 13th district voted out socially conservative lawmaker Robert G. Marshall in electing Danica Roem, a Democrat. Marshall has been one of the most socially conservative voices in the state House of Delegates, speaking harshly against abortion and gay rights.

Soon after, calls for corrections were issued. The first transgender person elected to the state legislature in the United States won in Massachusetts.
