Salter College to close over 'deceptive' practices, pay $1.6M in debt relief

WEST BOYLSTON — Salter College is closing amid continued allegations of “deceptive” practices to lure students, Attorney General Maura Healey announced Thursday. The 82-year-old college, which was founded in Worcester, and its parent, Premier Education Group, will pay over $1.6 million in debt relief as part of a settlement the companies made with the state.

The $1.6 million is in addition to a $3.75 million settlement the for-profit companies reached with the state in 2014 over allegations that the school misrepresented job-placement statistics and used misleading recruitment tactics in order to obtain tuition payments and fees from students.

The latest settlement is for unlawful and unfair practices the companies allegedly engaged in from April 1, 2016, to March 31, 2018.

Premier is to cease operations in Massachusetts by the end of the year and may no longer enroll Massachusetts students, including through its internet and other remote programs, according to a press release from the attorney general’s office.
