Democratic MSU trustee battle emerges as state senator confirms campaign

State Sen. Sylvia Santana of Detroit plans to challenge two Democratic incumbents for a seat on the Michigan State University Board of Trustees, Santana told The Detroit News, setting up a floor fight at the state party convention.

Santana's fight for one of the two MSU nominations at the Michigan Democratic Party's April 19 convention in Detroit will pit her against Brianna Scott of Muskegon and Kelly Tebay of Ann Arbor.

Neither trustee returned messages seeking comment on Santana's candidacy.

Scott accused then-MSU Board of Trustees Chair Rema Vassar of misconduct in 2023, leading the board in March 2024 to punish Vassar for violating the university's ethics policies and bylaws and request her removal from office by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, which the governor didn't do. Santana questioned the constitutionality of the request to remove Vassar, a fellow Detroit resident and Wayne State University professor, to Attorney General Dana Nessel, who didn't respond.
