'Heat, alcohol' helped spark 300-person Grand Haven brawl

GRAND HAVEN, MI -- Alcohol, heat and difference of opinion were likely factors in what police said festered into a fight involving a few hundred beach-goers in Grand Haven.

While the exact cause of the fight hasn't been determined, Grand Haven Public Safety Lt. Joe Boyle said those ingredients all played a role in starting the brawl, which closed Grand Haven State Park early Monday, July 3.

"This could have been stewing all day, the park started filling up at 10 a.m.," Boyle said. "Alcohol, heat, and I don't know what all contributed. The fact of the matter is there were heated things that occurred, differences of opinion or whatever, and that led to confrontations."

Boyle said law enforcement personnel were helping a 16-year-old who was unconscious due to alcohol consumption at about 7 p.m. Monday when shouting began to erupt from a nearby group of about 300 people. At least 8-10 fights broke out in that area, police said.
