MSU enrollment dips by nearly 900 students and revenue could be down up to $54 million
LANSING — Michigan State University enrollment is down nearly 900 students from last year, meaning a projected $54 million drop in revenue as officials continue fighting COVID-19's financial impacts.
Enrollment fell to 49,695 students this fall at MSU, a loss of 883 students, according to the fall 2020 enrollment report released Wednesday.
The decline includes a significant loss of out-of-state and international students, more than 1,200 students combined, who both pay more tuition than Michigan students. According to the report, in-state enrollment grew by 338 students from last year.
"MSU will continue to deliver on its core mission as an inclusive community with strong academic disciplines and a liberal arts foundation," said President Samuel Stanley Jr. in a letter sent to the MSU community Wednesday. "Despite our challenges, we will continue providing a world-class education, conducting high-caliber research and advancing outreach and engagement locally and globally."
