Detroit's election corruption choice: Schemer beats Dreamer.

The scheming Mike Duggan who impounded cars of gay guys in the parks, gave himself a raise from it, then when the lawsuits came he had his and the judgements were put on the city credit card that is now bankrupt. Who, just as Obamacare was about to make hospitals profitable, privatized the city owned hospital and got a 1.9M$ salary. But, he gave so much back: seventy one-thousand-dollar scholarships. So, um, he only made, um, ah, $1.83M$/yr. Well, he got a tax write-off with that I imagine. Wow. What a campaign filled with top notch advertising, advertising and more paid-for advertising. Jeepers! Why would anyone want to fund such a race with so much money? Why indeed. There goes our water department off to the Koch brothers.

Sheriff Benny Napoleon lead us to know that he was going to make residential neighborhoods wonderful again. What a dream. What a bunch of hoo-hah. He made a good showing considering his advertising -- none -- looked to be funded from his childhood cigar box piggy bank that got raided his junior year in high school. Good showing though.

No awful attack ads. It was a quiet race. No real choice. Just a dreamer and a schemer. Corruption by dreams, or corruption by schemes.

During the campaign I found it funny (in a sad way) that nearly everyone I talked to who knew Duggan planned to vote for Napoleon and nearly everyone who knew Napoleon planned to vote for Duggan.

It may be possible that Duggan won this election purely by virtue of being the lesser known candidate in the city.

It really is fascinating that he's the first white mayor since Gribbs.

I still have memories of voting for Coleman Young every time. I always said: show me someone better and I'll vote for him/her! Coleman sure was interesting.

But really, a serious question: does it matter which of these guys got elected? Does the office have any power any more in the age of Gov. Bain Capital Snyder?
