Go to Minnesota department of Labor and Industry. Should be a link to filing your vitals and a 800 number. Pretty straight forward,if you have any issues, use the telephone they are really helpful.

Good Luck.

The fried was hired from a 10-yr dead end job, after consulting to that new boss and all of a sudden the new boss decided that my friend did not "perform." When my friend asked about unemployment compensation, the boss suggested "to see a lawyer."

And there was no final check. If none will come - for the week of 15-23 - I think that the Dept. of Labor also will have to be involved.

So glad that both of us are now retired.

Sigh..

THE DOL IS NOT THERE TO HELP YOU.

Explain things clearly, in simple terms. Listen carefully, ask lots of questions. Don't let them trick you into admitting some kind of fault on some issue.

This friend get a long letter detailing things that got wrong. So I will advise. What is strange is that both the boss and the friend worked well before, the boss knew my friend and the capabilities and all of a sudden, in the last week, things were getting from bad to worse.

I wonder whether there are some hidden agenda - always is - in the personal life of this boss, or whether the boss decided that someone else should perform the duties at less pay...

Again, thanks for the warning.

Don't be shy about appealing a rejection.

I didn't, and regret it to this day. They got me by acting all agreeable and sympathetic. I still feel like a fool because of it.

and... I found out what the hidden agenda is: money. The owner/boss was a sole proprietor operating from home. My friend was consulting while completing an advanced degree, was not paid. I think that both considered this as apprenticeship. But the boss clearly was satisfied to offer a full time job. (No health benefit, but the ACA came to the rescue..)

Within six months the owner hired five people and rented a new office and, last week, told a staff meeting that no revenues were coming. And my friend was the highest paid. But instead of just leveling with my friend, the owner issued a termination letter describing all the bad decisions that my friend made. I think that the boss is hoping that my friend will be denied unemployment compensation. After all, this put a mark on the employer.

Will see.

might try and block my unemployment.

I went ahead & applied on line but then I did call to speak to someone. She told me that about the only way it gets denied in MN is if the employee was willfully incompetent or insubordinate - (like showing up to work drunk or going off in screaming tirade).
