Legislators take a chance on legalizing sports betting

JEFFERSON CITY — Sports gambling came a step closer to legalization in Missouri, following a special committee hearing on Tuesday, which included representatives from sports teams and gambling platforms.

"Any such legislation would result in a safe and responsible experience for those choosing to wager on our games," Bill Dewitt, the president of the St. Louis Cardinals, said in his testimony.

Two similar bills, filed by Republican Representatives Phil Christofanelli and Dan Houx, were grouped together for the hearing, following oft-alluded-to lengthy negotiations among stakeholders.

"Sports gambling is occurring right now, as we speak, across Missouri, and there are none of these protections," Rep. Christofanelli said.
