New Hampshire declares state of emergency over poisonous synthetic pot

(Reuters) – New Hampshire Governor Maggie Hassan declared a state of emergency on Thursday in response to 44 reported overdoses linked to people smoking or ingesting “Smacked,” a synthetic marijuana-like product sold in convenience stores as potpourri.

The state of emergency authorizes public health officials to investigate stores and quarantine the product, and Hassan directed the officials to work with local police departments to do so.

“These products pose a serious threat to public health, especially to young people, and it is our responsibility to do whatever we can to combat the recent rash of overdoses,” Hassan said in a statement.

The overdoses, none of which have been fatal, have primarily been reported in the Manchester area. Manchester police on Wednesday said they had found Smacked in three convenience stores and that those stores’ business licenses were revoked.

This is stuff that is sprayed with a "chemically engineered substances similar to tetrahydrocannabinol" (THC)

I think that is a bit misleading, and could have the effect of demonizing marijuana.

On the other hand, this means legalizing the real thing could save lives!

Stalling on legalization. Actual mj has no known adverse medical consequences.

while the synthetic stuff is very addicting, screws up the lungs, causes heart palpitations and other serious problems. It's man made by anyone so the dosage and the product has a wide range of potency. It's usually made with finger nail polish remover or some other poisonous chemical as well.

Legalize. Pot is not addictive in the same way as drugs. You might prefer to get a buzz but you don't rob the local liquor store to get some. You can easily quit at any time, even if you don't really want to.

dying....they are trying to find out if they are purposely giving it to them? It's been a while since a few kids died, after smoking it. they keep banning it in florida, but they switch around the ingredients, while they are all still there, but they it qualifies as 'different', and they allow it. I hope New Hampshire can do a better job. It's getting serious.
