FEMA buyout demolitions begin in Binghamton

Written by
Steven Howe

BINGHAMTON — In a matter of minutes Monday, the single-story home was torn down.

Left vacant since the 2011 flood, the house at 16 Baltimore Ave. was the first to be demolished in Binghamton under a Federal Emergency Management Agency buyout program that reimburses municipalities for purchasing flood-damaged properties and demolishing the houses and other structures.

The 18 city demolitions are expected to cost $213,200 and will be handled by All-Around Excavating of Johnson City.
