Medical marijuana bill gains first Republican sponsor in the NY Senate

Legislation that would legalize medical marijuana has gained its first Republican co-sponsor in the state Senate.

Sen. Joseph Robach, a Rochester Republican, added his name this week to the Compassionate Care Act, joining 17 other Democratic senators who have co-sponsored the measure. The bill’s primary sponsor is Sen. Diane Savino, a Staten Island Democrat.

“I think it is the right thing to do,” Robach told the Daily News Wednesday. “ Under a doctor’s care and direction, I think to allow those people to use everything in the spectrum makes good medical sense.”
