Council Speaker and Public Advocate join Lilly Ledbetter to fight for equal pay in city government

Feminist icon Lilly Ledbetter, Public Advocate Letitia James and Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito joined dozens of school safety agents on the steps of City Hall Friday morning to call on Mayor de Blasio to settle the federal class action pay discrimination lawsuit against the city.
A year ago, Bill de Blasio said if he were elected he would settle this case, said Sonia Ossorio, president of the National Organization for Women. He said he would do it immediately. he said he would make it a priority. he said it was a no-brainer.
The group filed the 2010 lawsuit against the Bloomberg administration and claim that the citys 5,000 school safety agents -- a group that is 70% women -- earn $7,000 less annually than the majority male workforce doing almost identical security work at other public facilities, such as public hospitals.
