Cuomo’s daughter lobbies Tkaczyk on farmworkers’ bill

Jordan Carleo-Evangelist, Staff Writer

To most New Yorkers — if they know her at all – Michaela Kennedy Cuomo is Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 16-year-old daughter.

To state Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk, she’s a New Yorker who would really like the Duanesburg Democrat to reverse her position on the Farmworkers Fair Labor Practices Act and help fight “leftover Jim Crow laws.”

In a lengthy and at times pointed letter to Tkaczyk posted Tuesday on the Tumblr page of the Rural & Migrant Ministry, Kennedy Cuomo urges Tkaczyk to make “the one moral decision as a Democrat” and back the bill that would expand workplace protections for farmworkers, including an eight-hour workday, 24 consecutive days off, overtime pay and collective bargaining rights.

While the bill has passed the Assembly before, it has never passed the Senate.. Its opponents include the New York Farm Bureau, which argues the measure would “dramatically increase the cost of farming in New York State at a time when most residents are experiencing the same financial crisis as our farming families and worrying about how to afford food on their tables.”

A couple of weeks ago I was unable to drive home, kept going around in circles since the south end of the main street through town was blocked off. Turns out there was a bad fire, got a message from my friend (who's also on DU ) who told me what was going on and included a link to the Post Star article on it, while it was still going on, and that explained everything. It was an old apartment house, very sad.
