City targets "rat reservoirs" with new rodent squad

The city is launching an attack on “rat reservoirs” - colonies in parks and sewers where dozens of rats lurk and infest the surrounding neighborhood.

Mayor de Blasio’s budget for the Department of Health includes $611,000 to launch a new rat squad targeting the festering nests, officials told the City Council Wednesday.

“Nobody wants rats in their community, and we are committed to tackling the rat problem,” Health Commissioner Mary Bassett said.

The department will hire nine inspectors hunt down and exterminate the reservoirs in parks, sewers, and subways in neighborhoods in Manhattan and the South Bronx.
