Parks commissioner embraces ‘park equity,’ vaguely

Dana Rubinstein

Like the mayor who appointed him, Parks Department commissioner Mitchell Silver believes in "park equity." Also like the mayor who appointed him, Silver has yet to determine just how he plans to achieve that goal.

"We don’t know the how at this point," Silver told reporters on Wednesday after his first hearing before the New York City Council, one that took place on his 16th day in office.

What about that proposal by State Senator Dan Squadron to redistribute some money from wealthy conservancies to poorer ones?

“What I’ve said is that there is a goal out there and we want to sit down to have a conversation," Silver said. "Park equity is the goal and there are many ways to get to that direction.”
