Letitia James: NYC should mirror new state regs on birth-certificate gender ID

CELESTE KATZ

When the state recently changed its rules to no longer require proof of sex-change surgery from people who want to change their gender ID on their birth certificates, New York City wasn't included.

Public Advocate Letitia James -- who pushed for that very measure as a city councilwoman in 2011 -- is renewing the call now in a letter to the city's health commissioner, Dr. Mary Travis Bassett.

The city issues its own birth certificates, meaning a local change is required to bring Gotham into line with the state's new rules, which still require proof of medical treatment for gender dysphoria if not actual surgery.
