Pols blast downsizing plan for Section 8 tenants

ERIN DURKIN

A host of pols gathered at City Hall Wednesday to blast a policy requiring tenants with Section 8 vouchers to move to smaller apartments.

U.S. Reps. Charlie Rangel and Carolyn Maloney headlined the press conference against the so-called “downsizing,” which was also attended by a lineup of city and state legislators.

Faced with $35 million in federal budget cuts, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development, which administers the federal rent subsidy program, has declared that tenants living in apartments deemed larger than necessary will have to move or face hiked rent.

Rangel, fresh off his re-election victory, slammed Congressional Republicans for slashing funds for urban needs.
