Greg Mason
AUBURN | When September rolls around, indoor smoking at public housing units managed by the Auburn Housing Authority will not be permitted.
The ban was instated by the authority's board of commissioners on Monday. A total of 238 affordable housing units at Olympia Terrace and Melone Village will be affected.
The ban is the sign of a growing trend seen in affordable housing complexes across the nation. The state of Maine has banned smoking inside subsidized housing units. The cities of Toledo and Houston have done the same.
Enforcement will only apply to indoor smoking and extends to guests and office staff, as well. Outdoor smoking will still be allowed on the premises. One infraction would result in a warning while the second could mean the termination of a resident's lease.

(14,449 posts)but this is another kick in the butt for poor people. I guess just because you use government funds for homes, it is not considered your own. Our country gets wackier and wackier every day. I am so sadden by the loss of freedom.

(14,449 posts)but I find it incredible that people used to smoke in airplanes, malls, homes, theaters, schools, cars, and everywhere else and there was not nearly the asthma problem. I am not sure what the difference is without the smoke everywhere....maybe has to do with the body getting used to the smoke....lol. I don't know. It seems that people are sicker today than in the 70's.
