Low-income senior citizens who want to purchase fresh local produce will get some help from a federal program that is providing $1.5 million in coupons across the state as part of the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program.
The program awards grants to states, U.S. territories and federally recognized Indian tribal governments to provide low-income seniors with coupons that can be exchanged for eligible foods at farmers' markets, roadside stands and community-supported agriculture programs.
The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Service and will provide checkbooks worth $20 to New Yorkers aged 60 and over, earning $1,800 or less per month or $2,426 or less per month for a couple.
"By providing low-income seniors with the means to purchase fresh, homegrown food, we are empowering thousands of New Yorkers to lead healthier lives while also supporting local farmers' markets across the state," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said. "I am proud to join our federal partners to make this program a success, and I encourage all eligible New Yorkers to explore a farmers' market near them this summer."
