Joseph Spector
Under pressure from New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio this year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo agreed to create a $340 million pot to expand universal pre-kindergarten across New Yorkwith $40 million to go to schools outside the city.
So far, though, there arent many takers.
Just 83 of the states roughly 700 school districts have expressed interest in applying for the money for full-day prekindergarten, according to the state Education Department. The education department has repeatedly extended deadlines to apply and express interest in the program, but fewer districts are looking to it, Capital New York reported today.
Initially, 123 districts said they were interested, and now it appears 83 will apply.

(14,449 posts)The reason I WISH they did not need to go is because kids are only young once and having to get up every morning from the age of 4 until forever is just awful. Why can't they just play until 6 like in Korea and Japan and then start a more format in teaching. Kids are under too much pressure to learn and be the best. I see it everyday. Kids are stressed out. No recess, no fun. And we wonder why at 16 kids are bored with school or worse why college students finally get to have FUN and go all rebellion. It is because we know longer allow kids to be kids.
