Anti-Fracking Stephen Levin Collected Royalties from Natural Gas Drilling Companies

?w=635&h=423

Jillian Jorgensen

Anti-fracking City Councilman Stephen Levin has been receiving royalties from energy companies that use the controversial natural gas drilling technique, according to filings with the Conflicts of Interest Board.

Mr. Levin reported outside income in the form of royalties from several natural gas and oil energy companies — between $1,000 and $5,000 each from Breitburn Energy Partners, LP, and Linn Energy, LLC, as well as a smaller amount, $70.46 from Muskegon Pipeline LLC.

Both Breitburn and Linn Energy use hydraulic fracturing — better known as “fracking” — to extract natural gas in some cases, according to their annual reports, which both note that tighter restrictions would make their operations in some areas more difficult.

So if his royalties are for extraction on NY property he owns, it had to be conventional drilling. But the article says it's from investments. That would probably be dividends right?

No one can possibly have received royalties from fracking in NY up to and including today. Plenty of conventional wells. We received a few dollars for leasing about 25 years ago but the well a quarter mile away didn't hit gas. This was ages before the dangers were revealed. Since then we've turned down all offers. If we don't sign a lease, we still can be sent royalties at a reduced rate, but we would have no liability for problems because we wouldn't be drilling partners. We're working hard to prevent fracking here and around the state and beyond.

The town we live in is run by Republicans who run unopposed. The county is now solid Republican controlled. My congressman supports fracking. That says it all. Once Cuomo gives the go ahead, there will be a well pad 1000 ft from our home.

Our neighbors are split 50-50. You can guess who's for it and who's against. We'll just cross our fingers and keep education whoever we can.
