Bill would require notice of contraception coverage changes

Jon Campbell

A new bill would require New York employers to provide written notice 90 days before making any changes to insurance coverage of birth control.

The proposal from state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart Cousins, D-Yonkers, would apply to all companies doing business in the state who provide health coverage to their employees. Employers would also be required to notify workers of the contraception coverage offered by their health-insurance plans prior to their hiring.

The bill comes after the U.S. Supreme Court sided with national chain Hobby Lobby late last month, ruling that some employers can decline coverage of some forms of birth control based on religious beliefs.
