Ahead of Harlem bash, Charles Rangel tamps down successor buzz

DAN FRIEDMAN and CELESTE KATZ

Rep. Charles Rangel on Thursday dismissed rumors that he will try to designate a chosen successor before he is reelected in an uncontested general election vote.

But the Harlem Democrat also made clear that he plans to try to help determine who will replace him after the upcoming two-year term, which he has said will be his last.

“No,” Rangel said when asked if he will attempt in the near future to identify preferred a candidate replace him in Congress in 2017.

“I couldn’t possibility do that. People have to realize. I have not been reelected. I have been selected by the Democratic Party to run in November.”
