‘Dark Negro’ description by cops in upstate New York town angers community

LEE MORAN

An upstate New York police department has caught heat after it described a suspect in a string of shootings as a "dark Negro" in a line on his mugshot about his complexion.

Shamir Allen, 19, was stamped with the offensive, antiquated description by Lockport Police Department officials last week after being picked up by cops.

Black leaders from across the region have condemned the "disgusting" use of the phrase by the Lockport Police Department, calling the term "ignorant" and "insensitive."

"That word was developed during slavery to subjugate, discriminate, to make people feel bad about themselves," Erie County legislator Betty Jean Grant told WGRZ-TV.
