Cuomo's 'Governor's Challenge' on Owasco Lake Saturday to promote Finger Lakes, local tourism industry

Robert Harding

While professional anglers aim for the biggest catch on Cayuga Lake, Gov. Andrew Cuomo will hold a friendly fishing competition of his own Saturday on nearby Owasco Lake.

Cuomo, who will be making his first trip to Cayuga County since taking office in 2011, will bring the "Governor's Challenge" to central New York. He has previously held challenges in the Adirondacks whitewater rafting races to promote the region's assets and the local tourism industry.

The governor is expected to spend most of the day in Cayuga County. While his schedule for Saturday hasn't been released, the fishing portion of the day will likely occur in the morning. A luncheon is also in the works featuring locally grown and New York-made products, according to Meg Vanek, executive director of the Cayuga County Office of Tourism.

1. Thanks for this, Justin!

I just hope he doesn't "overturn" the winning fish.

Traffic should be interesting next weekend. Not "POTUS-in-town" interesting, like last year, but nonetheless interesting.

4. I was a kid when I last did it.

Never appealed to me.

I am glad he is doing a better job at promoting upstate than others before him.

5. I agree! Senator Clinton was also promoting upstate, and...

...listed our Seward House as one of her favorite places upstate.

Secretary Seward's father-in-law, Elijah Miller, was a cousin of my great-great-great-great grandfather, for what it's worth.

7. We Auburnians call ourselves, "History's Hometown"...

...because of Secretary Seward and Harriet Tubman-Davis's connections to our city.

You've been here? No kidding! What did you think?

9. The fresh water of the Finger Lakes runs thru my veins...

Born and raised here. I've left at times, but I always seem to come back home.

11. The sunsets on Cayuga Lake can be breathtaking!

I spent many summers at our camp on the east shore of Cayuga Lake, and the sunsets are something burned into my consciousness...

13. The Narrows are beautiful, too!

I had the opportunity of sailing my cruiser, Das Billig Boot II thru it in 2001:
