New group aspires to speak for taxi passengers

Dana Rubinstein

Every day, 600,000 New Yorkers ride yellow taxis. And yet, as a former taxi commissioner told Capital last year, "passengers are like Sasquatch sightings” at Taxi and Limousine Commission meetings.

That may soon change.

Last week, a spokeswoman for Cab Riders United, an organization that aspires to advocate for taxi riders in much the same way the Straphangers Campaign advocates for subway riders, emailed to announce the group’s formation.

"Our theory is that organizing a voice for passengers and the public will lead to their interests being better addressed," said Michael O’Loughlin, the nonprofit lobbyist and Bloomberg-era congestion pricing advocate who’s acting as Cab Riders United's campaign organizer.
