Pollsters on not asking about Cuomo-Teachout

ALBANY—The public polls of a head-to-head contest between Andrew Cuomo and Rob Astorino have arrived with grim regularity since the start of election season, all showing the governor comfortably, unsuspensefully ahead of his Republican opponent.

But with less than three weeks until the Sept. 9 primary, none of the polls have bothered to try to measure Cuomo's standing against his Democratic opponent, Zephyr Teachout.

This apparent disinterest would seem to contrast with the assessment of Team Cuomo, which has taken Teachout seriously enough to undertake an energetic effort to knock her off the primary ballot—an effort that finally failed Wednesday as an appeals court ruled against the Cuomo campaign's challenge to her residency.

It's true that Teachout, a Fordham Law professor and former Howard Dean campaign aide, has next to no chance of beating Cuomo or even coming close, despite her recent labor endorsements and his Moreland mess. But if it were only a question of competitiveness, the pollsters could just as easily have decided not to bother with Cuomo-Astorino, either.
