No ‘direct answer’ after Sharpton meets with feds

Conor Skelding

The Rev. Al Sharpton and the family of Eric Garner met for 25 minutes with Loretta Lynch, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, on Thursday afternoon to reiterate their call for federal prosecutors to take over Garner's case.

Sharpton said that he and Garner's family requested the U.S. attorney "start a serious federal investigation of the civil rights of Eric Garner being violated that resulted in his death."

Sharpton made the same request in a July meeting with Lynch's staff, but said on Thursday that he wanted to repeat it "now that the local Staten Island district attorney has empaneled a grand jury, so that it is clear that the request to the Eastern District does not—in any way, shape, or form—change."

Garner died last month on Staten Island as police attempted to arrest him for selling untaxed cigarettes.
