Season's First Human Cases Of West Nile Reported On SI

The season's first human cases of the West Nile virus have been diagnosed on Staten Island.

Health officials say two residents are in the hospital being treated for encephalitis, a serious infection affecting the brain and spinal cord.

They say one of the patients is believed to have contracted the virus in another state.

Transmitted by mosquitoes, health officials say they will spray for the pests next week.
