City to rename streets for fallen officers

Gloria Pazmino

The city will rename two streets in honor of police officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, who were killed in the line of duty earlier this month while sitting in their marked patrol car in Brooklyn.

Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito announced the renaming on Wednesday. Legislation to enact the renamings will be sponsored by council members Mark Treyger and Rafael Espinal, who represent the two officers' home districts.

“Our fallen heroes will never be forgotten," de Blasio said in a statement. "Their memory lives on in their families, and in the NYPD family. And now it will live on in the streets of the communities these brave men lived in and protected. This is an expression of our pride in each of these men, and our sadness at their loss.”
