Schneiderman to introduce public corruption bill

Jimmy Vielkind

ALBANY—Sensing little appetite from lawmakers to address ongoing corruption arrests, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on Wednesday will introduce a bill banning outside income for state legislators and overhauling the campaign finance system.

In an op-ed to be published in the Albany Times Union, Schneiderman said lawmakers will leave a “glaring omission” if they try to go through the next 12 scheduled days of the legislative session without changing any laws in response to the arrest of State Sen. Dean Skelos, a Republican who was ousted as majority leader of the state's upper chamber.

... the absolute nonchalance of the rest of the ( so far) un-indicted legislators.

They made a huge stink two or three years ago when there was a possibility of the law being changed to require them to disclose their private practice ( law) clients. A big enough stink so that the idea was dropped or watered down.

( The issue there of course being conflict of interest in taking private legal work ....i.e. $$$$... for people who might have "business before the state" or might seek favors and consideration on OTHERS' behalf.)

So one HAS to assume there's a lot for them to be worried about there.

And Bharara seems like the REAL DEAL. He's actually going after people. Full TILT.

But the Albany incumbents seem blissfully unconcerned. You'd expect a flurry of at least COSMETIC legislation, pretending to deal w. the culture in Albany. But I'm not even seeing THAT.

I don't get it. Is there something called "Skippers of the Titanic Syndrome"? If there isn't maybe they're ought to be.

I guess they think they're too big to fail. Or to get indicted.

I think they're nuts.
