Schumer Endorses Candidate for Public Advocate

Starting Monday, Senator Charles E. Schumer will make a rare appearance in a television commercial backing his preferred candidate in a New York City Democratic primary

Not for mayor, even though a former staff member, Anthony D. Weiner, is on the ballot. Nor for comptroller, even though his colleague Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand has sided with Scott M. Stringer, the Manhattan borough president.

Instead, Mr. Schumer is throwing his political weight behind a protégé, State Senator Daniel L. Squadron, in the battle for public advocate.

Mr. Schumer’s commercial, which will be aimed initially at cable television, could generate more attention for a race that has so far been largely ignored. A live televised debate on Thursday could help to change that, as well.
