Assembly Democrats warm to legislation exposing Trump's tax returns

ALBANY — Legislation enabling congressional oversight committees to get their hands on President Donald J. Trump's state tax returns appears to have the tacit approval of Assembly Democrats, according to multiple sources.

The proposal, which passed the state Senate last week and is backed by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, was the focus of an internal discussion by Assembly Democrats Monday evening.

It's not clear how the Assembly will proceed, though, as there were conflicting reports about the path forward from lawmakers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the discussion. One member expects a vote next week, while another described the conference as "receptive" and a third said there was support for the legislation.

Assembly Democratic spokesman Michael Whyland did not immediately respond to a request for comment Monday evening.
