Electric Zoo festival canceled after two deaths

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Organizers of the Electric Zoo music festival on Randall's Island say the last day of the event was canceled Sunday after two deaths at the event.

During the first two days of the festival, two concert-goers have died, while at least four others became critically ill and have been placed in intensive care at area hospitals.

Definitive causes of death have not yet been determined, but investigators say both appear to have involved the drug MDMA, or ecstasy.

The city recommended cancellation of the event's third and final day, and the event promoters have agreed.

Police identified those who died as Jeffrey Russ, 23, of Rochester, N.Y., and Olivia Rotondo, 20, of Providence, R.I.
