Final Face-Off in Comptroller Race; Poll Says It’s Tight

Eliot Spitzer and Scott M. Stringer sneered, scoffed and all but snarled at each other on Wednesday during a final, testy encounter before the primary election in the race for New York City comptroller.

The two Democratic candidates sparred hours before a new poll was released suggesting that the contest was a dead heat.

The poll, conducted by Quinnipiac University between Aug. 28 and Sept. 1, had Mr. Stringer slightly ahead, winning the support of 47 percent of likely Democratic voters, with 45 percent for Mr. Spitzer. But that meant the candidates were essentially tied because the difference fell within the poll’s margin of sampling error, which was four percentage points.

As in previous polls, there was a large racial gap. Black voters likely to cast a ballot in the Democratic primary supported Mr. Spitzer, 61 percent to 32 percent, while white likely voters backed Mr. Stringer, 60 percent to 36 percent.
