City Council bill would ban employers from Facebook friending job seekers, employees

Some City Council members are trying to make sure that you don’t have to be friends with your boss — at least not on Facebook.

The Council plans to start hearings Wednesday on an Internet privacy bill that would bar employers from demanding access to the social media accounts of job candidates and employees.

“Why should an employer have access to all this information?” asked Sarah DeStefano, 26, who plans to testify at the Wednesday hearing in City Hall.

The Brooklyn Law School grad says she was denied a job at an upstate district attorney’s office after refusing to “friend” her potential boss on Facebook as part of a background check. She refused. “There’s a line that employers shouldn’t be able to cross,” she said.

mandating that you friend them if you are an employee or prospective employee. HUGE difference.
