Albany's mayor says he is serving his last term
Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings held a press conference Wednesday morning following a letter released Tuesday night announcing he will not be seeking re-election and that he has no immediate future political plans.
"It has been my privilege to serve as mayor of this great capital city for twenty years." Jennings said at a crowded press conference in City Hall.
"I have been thinking about this for weeks...I have had a lot of discussion with my personal friends...and most importantly my family. I have had a lot of energy and a lot of hours and time and a lot of things I have missed in my grandkids growing up," said Jennings. "Now is the time to take a step back, evaluate where you are and where you are going, and do what is best. The city will be fine. I am not going anywhere; I will work with anyone that wants to work with me."
Jennings was elected as the 74th Mayor of Albany in 1993. Prior to his election, Jennings was a teacher and school administrator for 21 years in the Albany City School District. He also served 13 years as a member of the Common Council representing the eleventh ward
