Controversial Gas Pipeline From NJ To Manhattan's West Side Now Up And Running

A controversial 20-mile natural gas pipeline running from New Jersey to Manhattan's West Side is now up and running.
A spokeswoman for the Texas-based Spectra Energy Corporation told NY1 that fuel is now flowing through the $857 million conduit.
Officials are hailing it as a safe and reliable way to reduce the city's natural gas expenses.
However, not everyone is thrilled to see the pipeline operational.
"Today is really a sad day, for me and for New York City as a whole," said activist Patrick Robbins. "New Yorkers are now exposed to risks from radon contained in the gas, which is the second-leading cause of lung cancer after smoking, and the fire risks should something go wrong with this pipeline. And the company, Spectra Energy, has an abysmal safety record. Pipeline oversight in this country is really preposterous, and so it's really only a matter of time before something goes wrong."
